My applecare expired about two months ago. Today, I could not figure out where a strange smell was coming from; turns out the 30 pin connector on my iphone 4s was melting down. It was not plugged into the phone, but the adaptor was plugged into an outlet.

Make a Genius Bar appointment at your nearest Apple Store. Are you using an Apple wall adaptor?
Yes, using the Apple wall adaptor that came with the phone. I'm no where near an apple store . . . I could try one of the "authorized apple re-sellers" which is quite close and has offered good service in the past. Its a bit scary that this should happen suddenly with a cord that was in good condition and not frayed or damaged.
