Can Mac Mini mid-2010 support 2560x1440 IPS monitors?

According to Apple Support, the Mac Mini mid-2010 supports two resolutions depending on the port:

Mini DisplayPort with support for up to 2560-by-1600 resolution
HDMI port with support for up to 1920-by-1200 resolution

I'm considering one of the IPS panels that have 2560x1440 resolution. Can I run one with my Mac Mini mid-2010 by using a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI converter, as opposed to running HDMI directly to the monitor?

Seems some other posts in the Apple Support forums indicate that a Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort cable would allow my Mac Mini to support a 2560x1440 IPS monitor, provided the monitor has a DisplayPort.
