Can't add episodes of a show to my iTunes Library?

I have the episodes for a TV show on my computer, and they are in .MP4 format. I tried to drag and drop them into my iTunes Library and that didn't work and then I went to the Add File To Library and when I chose the file, they weren't added. I'm trying to put the episodes into my iTunes Library to put on to my iPad because I'm going on a trip.
