Apple ID problems

My old apple ID is not an email address. Recently, I was unable to log on. I requested to reset the password but the email to reset never arrives. I tried to answer the security question but it says my date of birth doesn't match the records. I've lost access to it even on iTunes which had a credit from a gift card. How do I gain access to it again?
