cant i just copy the recovery disc to a blank cd and boot from that

Trying to help a friend with his macbook but its screwed up and I really just want to reinstall the software. can i just find the software on the internet and download it to a disc then reboot his computer from that disc?

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.7.5), recovery disc

Since you indicate that the computer is a Macbook, it originally came with installation disks. Since you indicate that the Macbook is running Lion, that OSX should be in the owners App store account. You may download it from there.

You should be able to reinstall Lion via recovery:
