Option to change quality for screen recording is not showing!

I recently upgraded my Apple Mac to 10.9.1, and I decided to do a screen recording. Afterwards, I viewed the footage, and it was of very poor quality. After much internet research, I realised that there is supposed to be an option for medium or high quality when you click on the white triangle on the small screen that appears when you click 'New Screen Recording'. These quality options do not appear for me, only options for Microphone and Show Mouse Clicks. How do I get the quality options to appear?
