One or more applications are using the iTunes scripting interface. Are you sure you want to quit?

I'm using iTunes for Windows 8.1 and had a couple annoyances arise yesterday.

First, every time I went into the iTunes Store, iTunes would have an error and then shut down. I did some searching online and found a recommend solution was to copy the QTMovieWin.dll file from c:\program files (x86)\common files\apple\apple application support\ and paste it into c:\program files (x86)/iTunes. Well this worked fortunately.

However, another problem I started getting yesterday was that whenever I close iTunes now, I get the message: "One or more applications are using the iTunes scripting interface. Are you sure you want to quit?" I never used to get that before. The only things that I changed about my computer yesterday was the above fix, having downloaded and installed Google Chrome Frame for Internet Explorer 11, and having used a new Elecom USB headset for the first time. Otherwise nothing else changed about my computer yesterday.

Well, I have uninstalled Google Chrome Frame, and that didn't solve the problem. I checked my computer and as far as I can tell that USB headset didn't install anything, and it's not even plugged in anymore. So, could the above fix for solving the problem with the iTunes Store causing iTunes to shut down be the problem? Is there any way to find out what apps are using the iTunes scripting interface, or is there at least a list of apps that are commonly known to use the iTunes script? Note, I haven't downloaded any special apps, and all the ones I have are the ones that came on the computer as default. As for plug-ins, I have a few but again most of them came on the computer and none were new from yesterday except for Google Chrome Frame which I've uninstalled.

Hello Papplepie,

Open Control Panel on your Computer and See which all Plugins are installed in it, you can sort by date and check what all things got installed on your Computer in the last 2 days and see if they are important for you or your computer. Do not delete anything if you are not sure about what it is and what it does. And if you find "FoxyTunes Plugin" then you can go ahead and uninstall it and then restart your computer once and check if you are getting the same pop up again while closing iTunes.

Hope it helps you

Well, I've looked over all the add-ons I currently have enabled on my Internet Explorer 11 browser, and here's what I've found:

Apple Inc.
iTunesDetectorClass

Microsoft Corporation
Bing Bar Helper
Bing Bar
XML DOM Document 3.0
Microsoft Silverlight
XML DOM Document
Windows Media Player
XML HTTP 3.0

Microsoft Windows
XML DOM Document 6.0
XML HTTP 6.0

Microsoft Windows Third Party Application Component
Shockwave Flash Object

And as for programs, here's everything I've installed since after installing iTunes:

Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable (x64)
Intel(R) PROSet/Wireless NFC Softeware
NVIDIA Graphics Driver 327.62
Bing Bar
Bing Desktop
Microsoft Silverlight
Microsoft Sync Framework 2.0 Provider Services (x...
SyncToy 2.1 (x64)
Microsoft Sync Framework 2.0 Core Components...
Amazon Send to Kindle
Adobe Reader XI (11.0.05)
Adobe Reader XI MUI

Do any of these add-ons or programs look like they might be the one(s) using the iTunes scriping interface?

I have had this problem for a while.

In my case, I had previously used a tool called "itunesexport" which is pretty good - I used it to extract playlists from the itunes database. [http://www.ericdaugherty.com/dev/itunesexport/#Download].

Some time ago I uninstalled this tool, and forgot about it. I then noticed that I was seeing the problem with itunes not closing down instantly because something was using the scripting interface apparently....

As a last resort, I looked for all instances of "itunesexport" in the registry using my favourite "Registry Workshop" tool, and sure enough there were 8-10 traces left, despite being "uninstalled".

As you may know with Windows, uninstalling is often not as complete as you'd like. Anyway, as soon as I'd cleaned the registry with my Reg W/Shop tool, itunes immediately behaved and shut down instantly, as it should.

I imagine there may be many applications that might use the scripting interface that you assume you've uninstalled, but clearly quite a lot of registry clutter remains persistent and active.
