Hi there.
I need urgent help. My wife is doing an essay and she needs MS Office (or alternative) on my Macbook Air. She needs to save the essay as a .doc format. She is very frustrated.
Please any advice or help on what to download or is there anything on the Mac App store?

iWork is now free if you are running Mavericks. The parts (Pages, Keynote, Numbers) are "stripped down" compared to their predecessors but may be sufficient to write an essay. You can export to .doc from Pages (Select File>Export to> Word)
There are free alternatives to MS Office, such as OpenOffice, NeoOffice or LibreOffice.

Her problem is the college has sent her a format and whenever she saves it in Open Office and Libre Office its coming out as a bit of a mess i.e. columns have disappeared, etc.
In that case you are going to need to purchase Office from Microsoft to maintain the formatting. Sorry
Check to see if the school provides a copy at a student discount.

+1 on that. Looks like the format is Word specific. Chances are anything other than Word will affect the formatting.

No. It appears that formatting techniques were used that can only be resolved by MS Office.
