I just switched out my old hard drive for a new SSD and put the old one in an external bay. But it comes up completely empty when I plug it in. Did I accidentally clear everything or is there something I have to do?

It sounds like you already did format it. The only thing you can try is to repair it with Disk Utility, but it sounds like it's already blank.
Oh wow I am sorry I was looking in the wrong place. In finder I clicked on the old HD at the bottom but then looked through the blank SSD. Ah that makes me feel a lot better. Thank you for helping though
