Q: How do I get Facetime to work on my iPod?

I have an iPod 4G w/iOS 6.1.5

My friend has a new iPhone & we're trying to connect on Facetime. I've never used Facetime before. I do have a Facetime icon on my iPod. My friend has connected to someone with an iPad. What do I need to do to make it work? Do I need to put my cell# or landline# into Facetime somehow?

For FaceTime you need to have an Apple ID, and a WiFi connection.  When on WiFi, you can use Contacts to select the other person's email address for the connection.

I have an apple ID & Wi-Fi. The Facetime accesses my Contacts, but when I call, I only see my own face on the screen & attempts to connect with my friend hasn't worked. It tries to call, but we can't seem to answer & the calls disconnect.

Also, what # would my friend use to call me? It seems like I need to do some sort of setup, but I don't know how or what phone # I would (or should use).

    iOS: Using FaceTime

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4319Your friends call you on what is listed in Settings>FaceTime>You can be reached At.

You can them oat what is listed.there on their device. They can't be the same on the two devices.

FaceTime on an iPod Touch cannot use a phone number, but can use an email address.

Go to Settings > FaceTime and Swtch FaceTime ON, see that your Apple ID appears correctly, and see that your email address appears under YOU CAN BE REACHED BY FACETIME AT.  Then try again and see if it doesn't work.

Thanks, for the links. I checked the link info & I had already tried suggestions given. It's possible it could be user error, but after asking around, I'm wondering if Facetime would work on my iPod. For one thing, I don't see where there's a microphone to speak into.

This ipod was given to me(my first), so the only thing I know about it is what the specs say in the settings. I think it's only a few yrs old(?)

    Version: 6. 1. 5 (10B400)

    Model: MC540LL/A

    Capacity: 6.3

(I don't know how to find out more on older iPods)

At this point, I think FaceTime might not be worth it, if it's going to be difficult.

I'm having fun just discovering apps, etc.

I do appreciate your help, IIIaass.

Ralph, I thank you for your reply & advice. I had checked those things after my first attempts & everything seemed set correctly. Your suggestion did confirm that I was on the right track.

Today, at work, I asked one of the 'youngsters'(20-somethings) & she mentioned if my iPod doesn't have a microphone, FaceTime won't work. Later, I checked & don't see evidence of a mic, so I'm thinking it won't work.

    Thanks, for trying to help.

Only iPods with an internal mic and cameras (4G and later) have FaceTime. Thus, that is not the problem. On the 4G the mic is behind the little hole on the backside of the iPod by the rear camera lens.

    Thanks again, IIIaass.

That answers my doubts about whether or not it's a 4G w/mic. There does seem to be a tiny hole next to the rear camera lens. (I thought the mic would be on the front)

So, it must be something my friend & I are doing wrong. My email & my Apple ID were already set in Facetime settings, so I'm guessing that's not it.

I'm wondering if it has to do with my friend using her iPhone # & me using an email addy?
Last night, I was trying the 'Messages' feature on my iPod(green icon w/the text bubble) & I noticed I couldn't send a message to my friend & the reason listed was because her email address isn't registered w/Apple. (?)

I'm confused, because I thought she said she had used that feature w/others, so I will ask her later.

I'm going to check out the Troubleshooting link some more & see if anything helps.

P.S. I saw this in the Troubleshooting link:

"FaceTime audio calling is not available with iPod touch (4th Generation)"

That sounds like it's not an option for my iPod.(?)
