ITNS - 500 scanner (for slides

I foolishly downloaded application for an ITNS-500 scanner for slides and negatives without researching product reliability. Have discovered it is a piece of junk. I shut down my computer and when I restarted, all I have is a grey screen with the apple and a spinning wait signal. I am using my husband's laptop to request help. Have I lost my computer to this awful scanner?

The driver software for this scanner is for Windows computers only so it wont work on a Mac.

Try this software repair procedure:

shutdown the Mac and restart

immediatly after the start up chime, hold down the shift key until the apple logo appears

let the Mac start up completely, it will take longer than usual as the hard drive is being repaired

go to; Applications > Utilities > Disc Utility > First Aid > Repair Disc Permissions

when this has completed restart the Mac normally

once the Mac has restarted drag all evidence of the software to the trash

This did not work. Is it ok to try this shift fix again? My computer went through the ticking noise when I first did the shift but it stopped clicking after about 5 min. and still has the spinning wait with the apple logo. It has been almost 20 minutes. (The front of the box and the instructions inside said it was campatible with Macs and even listed my operation system in the instructions but I still should have investigated it first.) Thank you for any help you can give me. susan z

Sorry I took this long, I was trying to find a OS 10.5 system to test before replying. However, no luck with that, so this advice is from memory.

Put the install DVD in the Mac and restart while holding down the C key. This should get you to an installation procedure, but you are not going to install anything. Go past the first screen - language selection by pressing the blue arrow. On the second screen you will see a menu bar at the top. Click Utilties, the select Disk Utility.

When DU is running you will see the name of the hard drive on the left. Select it with one click. The Frist Aid tab should be selected - if it is not, click it. Then click Repair Disk.

When that is done, quit DU and restart the computer.

If this all works and the computer restarts, trash the offending software that set this off.

Thank you for the time you spent answering this. I finally took my IMac to the Mac Experience inbetween a blizzard and power outages. They were very helpful and fixed it for the bench fee but could not answer as to what caused this problem. They said I was missing an important file for start up and could not be sure if the program installed caused the problem or if it just made the problem become evident. Thanks again for your time. susan z
