Q: time machine not found

iMac no longer recognizes that my Time Machine backup drive exists. Connections are fine. Cannot find disk drive through the Finder either.

When attempting to run backup I get following message:

"Backup Failed - The backup disk Iomega_HDD is not available." Details say "Backup disk could not be found."  Maybe coincidental but problem began right after running OS X Update. Anyone have an idea?

iMac (21.5-inch Mid 2010), OS X Mavericks (10.9.1)

Drag the icon for that external drive to the Trash (that safely unmounts it).

Unplug the drive for a minute or two and plug it back in. Test Time Machine again.

I think that will work. It asked me to perform an erasure of the drive and it is doing a full backup now which will take some time. I dont know if a full erasure was my only option but it appeared to be; I will be happy with that if it works. Thank you.
