How do I check my gift card balance without redeeming the card?

You have not told us what type of gift card you have!

If it is a gift card from some non-Apple related place, you would phone the place or try logging on to their website.

If it is an iTunes card that you have applied to your Apple ID account, you could try going to iTunes on your iPad, scroll down to the bottom in the music area, and click on the Apple ID link and sign in.

It sounds like you would like to "regift" a card that you received ... in other words, it sounds like someone gave you an iTunes gift card (otherwise, you would know the balance), and you would like to pass that along as a gift to someone else. If so, you will not be able to learn how much the card is worth.

What you could do instead is redeem the card by going to the iTunes app on your iPad, scrolling down till you see "Redeem", follow the directions, and then those funds would be applied to your account. Then you could independently send a gift of a different iTunes card to the other person. (Note your gift card funds cannot be used to purchase another gift.)
