2012 Retina MacBook Pro Keeps Crashing On OS X Mavericks

Hello and happy new year,

I've been a having a serious issue with my 2012 15-inch Retina MacBook Pro and Mavericks for a few months now and, honestly, I'm tired of this.

It all started a few days after upgrading to Mavericks. The system just hangs..nothing moves or works and I must reboot. This kept happening on a random basis with no obvious culprit. I did a fresh install of Mavericks but nothing changed. 10.9.1 also changed nothing.

Every time this happens I check Console for error messages but there is nothing that suspicious or consistent. It truly is random and there is no way I can replicate the situation. I don't know why. Could this be somehow a hardware problem? Something to do with RAM maybe?

There is no Apple Store here in Greece and I would like to avoid sending my computer to the official reseller for service because this is my only machine and I use it daily for work.

It would help to give us more information. Etresoft: EtreCheck is a free app developed by one of the contributors to this forum which will generate a system report on your computer. If you can use it to generate a system report and paste it in a response here, we can take a look and see what might be the problem.

Also if you could post the most recent crash log it would be good.

A crash log would be better. They are in ~/Library/Logs/Diagnostic Reports and /Library/Logs/Diagnostic Reports.

Try a safe boot (restart, hold down shift) and see how it runs for a while. If the symptoms seem gone in a safe boot, then you know it is some of the third party stuff you have installed that is not playing well with Mavericks.

Unfortunately, there is not a crash log in these folders for yesterday's date and time. Is that normal?

There's no point booting in safe mode as I can't seem to replicate this behavior. Everything seems always to run smooth until it's not.

I know Etrecheck showed no bad fonts,and normally I would recommend that you run Font Book to clean your fonts, but since you also ran App cleaner this changes repairs needed. "Cleaners" often do much more damage than good.

Rather than trying to recover the damage done, I would backup your drive using clone software, In the end you'll probably save time and have a stable system.

SuperDuper is free to do a full "Erase & Clone".

Boot from clone.

Erase your internal drive and install Mavericks.

Use Migration very carefully or manually move your data over to your clean system.

Mavericks has become much more stable since the latest updates. I do not remember the last time my computer hung.
