Help! We are having great difficulty trying to get apps from the Mac App Store. It does, then does not recognize our password. Tells us we are not connected to the Internet (when we are). Anyone have any ideas?

Help! We are having great difficulty trying to get apps from the Mac App Store. It does, then does not recognize our password. Tells us we are not connected to the Internet (when we are). Anyone have any ideas? We just bought a Mini Mac and are trying to obtain Pages and Numbers. I need them for work that I do as Secretary of an organization. Thanks!
