Playlists disappeared in iTunes after deleting from iPhone

I modified three playlists in iTunes, deleted the same named playlists off of my iPhone, plugged in iPhone to move (drag & drop) the now updated playlists of the same name from iTunes to iPhone, and after the iPhone did its sync the updated playlists that were in the iTunes directory are not gone. Help please???
