How do I upgrade to version 4.2.1?

I have discovered that 1) The ipod I bought is 2nd Gen and 2) It will not support an upgrade higher than version 4.2.1. I also know that is not the latest version available but it is the latest one available that is compatible with this ipod. This ipod is now sporting version 2.2. How do I upgrade it to 4.2.1 so it is at least a little more current?

Thanks!

Are you sure it is a 2G? A 1G can only go to 2.1.2 via iTunes. A 1G can go to 3.1.3 by

If your iPod does not have volume buttons on upper left edge it is a 1G.
