itunes back up deleted half of my pictures

Is there a way to recover my pictures that were deleted?

I was having problems with my phone so I made an appointment at the genius bar. I backed it up and went in to the appointment. While waiting I was looking through my pictures and playing around on Instagram. I ended up getting a new phone because of the problems. I got home and restored the phone to my back up that was only a few hours old and found that I was missing about half of my pictures.

What do I do now without having to pay $70 for a program that may or not get me my pictures back?
