Q: Airplay icon doesn't appear on iOS devices

Just set up a new AppleTv for my parents. Everything works great (Netflix, trailers, etc.) except I cannot see the Airplay icon on my iPhone and when I manually choose airplay on a picture, the AppleTV is not on my list of options. Remote app also can't connect. The computer recognizes the AppleTv in iTunes. I have followed the instructions for troubleshooting:

- software up to date on Apple TV and iPhone

- restarted both devices

- restarted router

- ensured both devices were on the same a Wifi network

- Airplay and home sharing enabled on both devices (turned both on and off multiple times)

I'm at a loss. My own AppleTv at home works without any issues, so this is frustrating.

The Icon isnt showing up because it only shows up when it is connected to the wifi, it may not connect to the wifi because your router may be blocking it....i think this should fix it i am in the middle of working through this problem myself. i will let you know how i get on with it.

Im having this problem with my Apple TV as well (gen 2).  I have a cable modem, but since the wi-fi on it is garbage I have a Cisco router ehternetted to the cable modem and I'm running the wi-fi off of the Cisco router.  I have a Mac mini, hard wired to the Cisco, running my iTunes with all of my shared movies with Home sharing enabled.  My Apple TV is hard wired directly to my cable modem.  The problem is that I have to disconnect my ethernet cable from the back of the appleTV to enable wi-fi to be able to stream anything from my iPad via Airplay.  Not a huge deal, but is there a way to stream say Vudu on Safari via my Mac Mini, or anyother product hooked via ethernet to my home network, as the battery in my iPad barely lasts for two Sunday football games and baseball season is quickly approaching.  It would be nice if they would put screen sharing on the apple TV, or at least screen mirroring of any device over ethernet (if its not already there somewhere).
