Drop-down menus disappear within seconds

Recently (since installing Mavericks?) I am finding that drop-down menus disappear within a few seconds, or sometimes instantly.

This does NOT happen when I log on as a guest user.

It happens with both both mouse and trackpad.

I have tried a safeboot.

I have tried repairing permissions.

Any ideas please?

Step one is to log into a newly created admin user account and see if the problem persists. If not, then examine the items in /new user/Library/Preferences/ and the ByHost subfolder. One of those is corrupted in the original account. Step one would be to make a list of them, log back into the original account, move those out of those folders to a newly created Desktop folder, and restart. If the problem's fixed, reset the prefs for the move apps/processes, and then delete the moved files.

I'm having this problem with the drop downs in Adobe Lightroom (5 and 6), and I tried everything that you suggested baltwo, but to no avail! The menus don't disappear in a different user, and they actually don't disappear if I use a physical mouse. But with the trackpad on my rMBP, they disappear within a second.

Any other preferences I could try deleting?
Thanks!
