saving to a lacie drive

I have a video of a weekend trip thats quite large. I just bought a LaCie drive and thought it would be better to get it all to the external drive and work with it from there. What is the best way to do this? I realize that I have to get it on imovie first then get it to the drive....right?

Thanks for any insight!

Gretchen,

If you have already created an iMovie project, moving it is just a matter of dragging and dropping. It will be copied over to the external drive.

Also to ensure that the drive works properly with iMovie, make sure that it is formatted Mac OS Extended.

You can check the formatting by selecting the drive in the Finder and then choosing Get Info from the File menu.

I actually have not created anything yet. I just wanted to get all the clips on the external and then work with them from there. Does that make any sense? I have about half of the clips on the lacie drive and when I open in it from there it just opens imovie BUT it does show the amount of memory left on the LaCie which is alot more obviously. I did check the format and it is OS extended!

yes this is true. What I have now is two seperate files (imovie files) that are in my external drive ( i do see them when I cllick on the external drive) but they are not seperate clips...its two imovie files that when I click on them it opens imovie and shows them all in the clip viewer. I thought they would be all seperate clips that I could pull individually.

a-how can i get them all together in one clip viewer?
b-can i edit the whoe thing from the lacie drive?

hope this makes sense?

Gretchen,

It sounds like you have created two separate iMovie projects. To consolidate all your clips in one place you can open both projects and simply copy and paste clips from one project to the other.

In an iMovie project, any clips you import are kept in that project file and are only available to that one particular iMovie project.

I'm assuming you are importing from a camera. Have a look at this tutorial. I think it will be helpful. Be sure to play the little video!

And to answer your last question, yes, you'll be perfectly fine editing the project on the external drive.

You'll be an expert in no time!
