i can no longer type accent marks by holding down a keyboard key

Suddenly, when typing, I can no longer hold down a key to get choices for multiple accents such as e é è ê.

How can one invoke this option?

Thank you,

Dear Ralph! You are up early!

I can do what you recommend; however, it used to be I could hold down a key corresponding to a letter with several variations, e, i, o, for example. After a short time, the options would become visible enabling one to chose from among them. Now no option appears. My question is how to invoke that option.

Can you help?

Thanks,

Thomas

P.S. I followed your directions to a T meaning that I did not restart my computer, I just logged out and back in. And now when I write in the code I get a "

-bash: -g: command not found" message.
