Q: I have over 1000 photos and plenty of iCloud space but I've lost the first 900 odd pictures on my photo stream and now it won't sa ... Can anybody help me? more

If new pictures are added to the Photo Stream, the oldest pictures that are already in the Stream will be deleted. Since you have over a thousand pictures, I think that's why you think some pictures are deleted. It's not possible to retrieve deleted pictures.

If you want to use iCloud to store photos, iCloud Photo Library is designed for that -- but be aware that all photos stored there will also be on all of your devices where you have iCloud Photo Library turned on and if you delete a photo from one place it will be deleted everywhere. iCloud Photo Library FAQ - Apple Support
