Q: Can someone redeem a gifcard without scratching the code? Just with the serial number of the giftcard?

Would it be possible to redeem a giftcard without actually scratching the code by calling apple support and providing only de serial number below the barcode?

No, that would almost certainly not be possible. Apple Support can't redeem a card in any case, and the iTunes Store usually would insist on a scan of both sides of the card and a copy of the receipt before they would help, and certainly would not do so if the user had not at least attempted the code under the scratchoff.

The reason why I ask is becasue someone i know is trying to sell a giftcard that they got from apple from buying a mac, for which you probabluy dont get a recipt. People have asked for a picture of the front and back and shown interest, then when asked why do they need a picture of the whole back they do not answer, which made me wonder that tehy could possible be after the serial code and make an attempt to redeem the card. Possibly saying that the code was scratched off or something like that. So is this scenario possible?

Again, it would be highly unlikely by any means that anyone could redeem a code with just the serial number. Even if they tried to contact the iTunes Store and claim that they couldn't redeem the card, the iTunes Store again would almost certainly ask for a scan of the back of the card and the scratchoff would be clearly intact.  The iTunes Store would just tell them to use the code under the scratchoff. I can't say that it's impossible, though.  If I were buying an iTunes card from someone I didn't know - though I doubt I would ever do so - I'd probably also ask for a scan of the card to make sure that the scratchoff is still intact, so I don't think this a particularly unusual or unreasonable request.

But it's your friend's call as to whether he/she wants to comply. If he/she has doubts, perhaps he/she should just wait until he/she can sell the card to a friend or other personal acquaintance.

    Regards.
