You could call the carrier and ask them. Also check your junk/spam mail, to be sure you did not miss any email notice from them about proceeding.

I've had it take as little as 24 hours with AT&T, but others posting in the forums have had to wait many days at times - there is no set period of time for any carrier.

You will not receive any unlocking codes from anyone. You contact the carrier the phone is locked to. If they authorize the unlock, they will provide you instructions. The instruction generally involves restoring the the phone. The carrier should be able to advise you how much time to wait for the unlock.

There is no "code". After you request the unlock from your carrier, they should alert you when the request has been processed. At that point, you need to restore the iPhone as new in iTunes to have the unlock take affect.

If you make a backup first, you can restore as new to get the unlock processed (you will get a confirmation message in iTunes), then restore again, from your backup, to put all your content back.

If the unlock request was sent by the carrier, and Apple has provisioned it in their database, then yes, restoring the phone as new should unlock it. If you do NOT see the message at the end confirming it is unlocked, then it is still locked, and you will need to contact the carrier to find out what is happening with your request.

Vodaphone authorizes the request to Apple. As soon as Apple receives it, then add the number to the clean list. It takes Apple about 5 minutes. I have read a number of posts about Vodafone and they seem to really take their time. One post I remember was about 30 days. You need to take this up with them. They control when the unlock is done, they will just tell you it is Apple's fault. If you restore the phone as new and receive the Congratulations, your phone is unlocked message, then it worked. Otherwise, it will not be unlocked.

Each carrier is different. Who have you requested the unlock through?

The restore has to be done via iTunes and the computer. No way around that for an unlock.
