I have a macbook pro and one second i was using it and playing music and it worked fine then i shut it and came back a minute later and sound isn't working from the laptop or on my head phones! The volume buttons work fine and it lets me change the volume but no sound comes out at all. And yes i have checked if the mute button is on and it isn't

You can try to select different device for sound Output in System Preferences -> Sound.
check system preferences and make sure built in is selected in output tab, and the volume is turned up.
Try taking a set of head phones and plugging them in and out several times, make sure to push all them all the way in and wiggle a little.Disconnect any peripherals, speakers, etc...then
try a pram reset. Power on holding the followoing keys: OPTION COMMAND P R continue to hold these keys till you hear the star chime 2 times, then release, reboot.
