Anyone know how to get to the settings menu on Apple TV?

I just bought Apple TV and it doesn't look like the drawings in the online manual. I am using the HDMI cable and the optical audio ports. Result is no audio. The manual says to go to Settings. How? My remote has 3 buttons: MENU, PLAY/ PAUSE and SELECT. MENU doesn't take me to settings.
