Is it worth it to upgrade?

I have a Macbook that I got back in 2009, and I've been noticing some compatibility issues. The online college courses I'm taking require certain versions of web browsers and Java, and when I go to download them I can't because it says they are not compatible with my current operating system. My computer is not really in the best shape either (has been dropped a few times and the disk drive was broken but i think i fixed it) it makes strange noises when starting up sometimes, and the plastic is cracking around the edges -_- I recently bought an external hard drive to back everything up just in case my computer decides to take a dump. Does time machine back up the new operating system software if i decide to get it? I just don't want to buy it, then be out the 20 bucks. Also, are there pros and cons to the new software? Any helpful information would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

If you want to carry on with a broken Mac:


Start by checking if you can run Snow Leopard:


Requirements for OS X 10.6 'Snow Leopard'

(NB: PowerPC applications can still be run in Snow Leopard using Rosetta, but they will not work in later versions of OS X.)


The OS 10.6 Snow Leopard install DVD is available for $19.99 from the Apple Store:

and in the UK:

When you have installed it, run Software Update to download and install the latest updates for Snow Leopard to bring it up to 10.6.8, or download the combo update from here:

Check via Software Update whether any further updates are required, particularly to iTunes.

Thanks for your reply, I actually already know all that info though....


I actually want a new one. But right now isn't exactly the best time for me to be spending another grand on a computer. So basically I'd like to keep it until i absolutely HAVE to get another.


I guess I just want some advice on how to overcome the compatibility issues with certain websites and browsers (if that's possible). Also, does anyone know the general lifespan of a Macbook? In my original post I stated that mine was from early 2009. I'm having some issues with it, and maybe someone can help with a fix, or is it just a sign that my computer is dying?


Also, what are the pros and cons to keeping my current OS vs. updating?

Well if you own an iMac assumably it came like mine did with an OS, so my point was why should i have to buy a new one just to get a **** update. Basicaly the mac side is useless unless i do, and im sorry but no company is going to force me to put my hand in my pocket so that they can make money. I would rather stick with the windows 8 i bought of my own accord (NOT FORCED) too, either on bootcamp or turn my iMac into a soul windows machine.


And in all fairness to the quality of a mac windows does IMO run better, on a mac machine (least it seems that way).
