Does the Boot Camp HD partition destroy existing data?

I'm retrofitting my old white MacBook (2006, with a 2GHz Intel Core Duo) to serve as a very occasional Windows XP platform, and was about to fire up Bootcamp Assistant when it occured to me that the HD partitioning necessary to create the Windows home might wipe my 230GB HD clean and that wasn;'t my intention. Can this partitioning proceed WITHOUT wiping my hard drive of all its contents, and just find vacant real estate?

Mac mini, OS X Mavericks (10.9.1), With 4GB RAM, 500 GB HD, Superdrive

Partitioning does not wipe your files. However, you have to be very careful, because any mistake in the partitioning step may remove all your files. You made a mistake and you lost everything.

Follow Apple's steps to install Windows > http://manuals.info.apple.com/MANUALS/1000/MA1519/en_US/Boot_Camp_Install-Setup_ 10.6.pdf Make a backup of your data before doing it.
