We would need a model number on the old AirPort Express to know what version that you have. Check on the side of the device to locate the model number, which starts with an "A" followed by four numbers.

Next, what will the AirPort Express do? What service are you looking for it to perform on the network?

Finally, you will need to have a Mac running Leopard (10.5.x), Snow Leopard (10.6.x), or a PC to be able to administer the older Express.

Unfortunately, the older A1084 version of the Express does not have a setting to "extend a wireless network", so it will not provide any help to you in that regard.

You need a new A1264 or A1392 version of the Express for that capability......and.....to work with Mavericks on your iMac.

You could use the older Express if you wired it back to the new AirPort Extreme.....and....used a Mac running Leopard, Snow Leopard, or a PC to set up the Express.

Would the new Express work to extend the network in the shop with a weak signal from Extreme ?

I cannot say how well this might work.....or even if....it might work.

The reason is that the Express can only "extend"' the quality of signal that it receives. If you have a weak signal where the Express will be located, the Express won't help much if any at all.....as it will try to extend a poor quality signal.

You may have better luck locating the Express about half the distance between the AirPort Extreme and the shop.

The bottom line........This is one of those times when you just won't know how well....or if...a new product will help until you actually try it out at your location.

Buy from an Apple Store or Apple online and you have 14 days to return the product if it does not meet your needs.

We've already told you what will be required to even configure the old Express. You might be able to use it for AirTunes or to connect a remote printer if it will be located where it can receive a strong signal from the AirPort Extreme.

It is not possible to have one Express set up to "extend" the wireless, and then have a second Express "extend" the signal that the first Express is already "extending".

The signal can only be extended one time.

Anytime you extend using wireless, you will lose speed, usually about half in the extended area. There is no loss when you connect devices using an Ethernet cable....that is why I recommend this type of connection whenever possible.
