Is there a way to get around Time Machine to update from Mountain Lion 10.8.5 to Mavericks?

Is there a way to get around Time Machine to update to Mavericks? According to the updater, both my hard drive and external drive are being used for Time Machine, but I can't alter that while in Mountain Lion.
