WD My Passport not detected on OS X Mavericks

WD My Passport not detected on OS X Mavericks, it doesn't show on the finder and i cannot see it in disk utility. I also use it in 2007 Mac Book Pro with Mac OS Lion 10.7.5 and it works perfectly.

I tried with different cables, different ports, updated the firmware, drivers... but nothing happens 😟 I also have another external WD drive and it works without problems. Any idea?

Thanks in advance!!

WD drives have software that comes on the drive that is incompatible with Mavericks.

The WD software that comes with the drive, that they want you to install on your mac, is also incompatible with Mavericks.

In some cases, the WD drives have firmware in the drive enclosure that is also incompatible with Mavericks.

All of this software is unnecessary in the first place.

If you just bought a WD drive, I'd take it back for a refund.

If your drive is one of those with the incompatible firmware, you could check the WD site to see if they have compatible firmware now. If you trust WD (I wouldn't). Another option is to remove the drive from the enclosure and put it in another (non-WD) enclosure, which is not too difficult, if you know how to use a screwdriver. Such enclosures can be found for a few bucks. I found one for five bucks in the bargain bin at Office Max.

Otherwise, you should backup any documents on the WD drive to another drive, and reformat (erase) it, and uninstall any WD utilities on your Mac.

If you like these drives, you can probably pick them up cheap now. I just saw another website with them on sale.

I had the same issue when upgrading to Mavericks. I did not have any of the WD bloatware installed on my system. I did; however, install the latest firmware for the drive.

Nothing seem to be working. So I tried something strange. I attached the drive to my work laptop using Windows 7. I got an error (probably because the disk is formatted for a Mac). So I thought, "that didn't work either."

Next step was to erase the disk. When I attached the drive back on the Mac, it magically worked and was recognized as an existing Time Machine drive.

Hopefully this might help someone out. Now I see how long it will take to do a backup. Still says "preparing backup...."
