Q: GPU Panic - OSX 10.9 Mavericks - Macbook PRO 6,2

Hello there,

 

Since upgrading to Mavericks here is what happens:

 

I use my computer without any problems, leave, it goes to sleep. I come back, it wakes up for about 5 seconds and has a GPU Panic and reboots.

 

I've read about the GPU recall for the Mid-2010 Macbook Pro. But my computer is older than 3 years, so Apple won't take it.

 

I understand they were clear about the rules of the recall. But then again, If I found out I screwed up in my work, I'd try to fix it, despite of how long later the damage showed up.

 

Anyway, here are the specs of the computer and the crash log. Anyone has any ideas what could be causing it? I've done a clean install of Mavericks, and it didn't fix it.

    Oberdan, Thank you sir. I read that information this morning and understand what they are saying. I've downloaded 2.1, and found a copy of 1.8.1 online and downloaded it to try later if I have issues.

    I'll try this for a while. I don't use an external monitor, so thats not a problem for me. I had a Kernal Panic this morning, but have been busy on my Mac on and off all day with no problem.

    That's really the frustrating thing... I've been a tech all my life and there isn't a pattern or one thing to go after. I'm positive it's the graphics card. I can have an affect on it, but can't prove it. Grrrrr.

    Just a quick update... I'm using GFXcardstatus 1.8.1 with it set on 'Intel Only' and have left the plist modification set to utilize the ram overflow as suggested earlier in this thread. I haven't had a kernal panic / random shut down for 5 days. This seems ot be a pretty good work around for me.

    Does anyone know what the latest version of OS X is that will work without crashing?

     

    If it really is the newer versions of OS X that are causing thse crashes, perhapse we could just stick with an older version for now.

     

    If there's a developer who could write a patch to make this model stable with Mavericks I'd be happy to pay money for that. Heck if all of us chipped in, it'd be far cheaper than logic board replacements.

    It appears to be hardware related. Even if the hardware doesn't fail completely, it doesn't work correctly with the newer versions of OSX. I believe (and I'm not a developer) the best they could do is a workaround / patch. Apple isn't going to step backwards for older machines, of course they want us to but new ones.

     

    To the best of my knowledge, the best OS FOR 2010 Macs is Lion. My machine came with Snow Leopard and was fine, I upgraded to Lion and was still fine. I began having problems with ML loaded that only got worse with Mavericks.

    Agreed, I'm not going to hope for a fix from Apple. But if a reputable indeopendent developer could make one, I'd happily pay for it.

    If the uk in your username means you're in England, and you were the original buyer, from Apple... then the Sale of Goods Act gives you very useful rights for up to six years after purchase.

    Often, after speaking to Apple executive/customer relations, users on these forums have said they got free repairs in any case.

    Regarding repairs - is it actually possible for Apple to repair this? From what I've read so far, it sounds like all of these machines have this fault built in, that it's an irreplaceable part of the hardware. Is that correct?

     

    If so, I wonder if I should look into getting a different laptop to replace it instead of a repair.

    They normally replace the logicboard, it's not unknown for the new one to develop similar problems.

     

    There's a (very) long thread here about the 2011 model, where someone in England got free repairs for a computer that didn't ever have a repair program (page 279 of 329, April 7). You might find it a useful read, and feel that your case is stronger due to the TS4088; albeit longer since purchase.

    You just described my MacBook perfectly.  Same year and model.  Same symptons.  I will try the Genius Bar at the Apple store to see if I can get this covered under warranty since it's obviously a manufacting defect from all I have read.  Not sure I would fork over any $$$ though since it obviously Apple's problem and they should have the decency to fix it.  I'll let ya know how it goes.  It's sad because I was an original Mac addict (1st Mac was a Mac 128) and finally after years of Windows decided to come back.  Well here I am back and not overly thrilled.

    I found 1.8.1 and got it installed and launching on login.  As long as it says " i " up in the status bar up top, I haven't had a single crash after another 2 weeks of work - I've been throwing pretty much everything at it too trying to break it.  Games don't run well but they run - everything seems stable again.  Come on WWDC refresh!

    Apple Repair Depot $310 for a new motherboard.  The Genius at Apple confifirmed using VST that this is one of the effected MacBooks.  I still think Apple should be paying for this since it is a manufacturing defect and Apple manufacturered a broke MacBook.  Unfortunately I need my computer back for now and don't have the time to argue.  BWT - I am typing this from a Windows 7 PC.  ARGH!!

    I was having the same problems, too, same 6,2 model, i5, 8GB ram, 256 GB SSD. Apple genius did the test, machine passed it and did not fall under warranty in february.

     

    they still kept it there for a deeper examination and suggested I should swap the logicboard PLUS all the ram, as the new logicboard would not work with the ram installed (8GB from purchase on).

     

    I declined, took it back, took out a 4GB ram chip (the upper one). no kernel panics in this configuration. this is reproducible for 10.9.2 and 10.9.3.

     

    I do have some graphic artifacts though (only by using the integrated card, and having been much worse in 10.9.2 than in 10.9.3).

     

    I did not check if the kernel panics could be related to the ram module I pulled out or to the upper ram slot. So far I just use the machine, the ram difference is not that noticable. I need the external monitor for keynote slide shows.

     

    might test some new ram chips (and go up to 16 gig ;-)

     

    pauljfromaugusta, PDCarter, are you doing fine with your configuration right now?
