Error message received logging into 10.4 X-Serve

I have a OSX server and attached X-Raid running 10.4. Trying to log at the server has given me an error message "ERROR: ...the home folder for the user account is located on an AFP or SMB server." Clients attached to the system can still log on, and it is running fine, I just can't access the server. I have no idea what caused the problem. I am open to suggestions. Talking to the System Admin. is out, because I have inherited the job by default. The system is a G4 X-Serve with attached X-Raid with both banks operating. Thanks
