MBP has grey screen of death but tests say all hardware working

I have a late 2011 15" MBP running 10.6.8. I was using is as I usually do when the screen went berserk and the sound froze up. After a restart I got an error messgae. Then It crashed again....I got it to restart again with the below error report. I managed to get most of it backed up, after starting it in single user mode, but then the screen went grey again and I clsoe the lid and got the three beeps. I also had a pink and blue --!--striped screen for a while.

I tried resetting the PRAM.

I also ran network utility and it said everything was okay.

I have run the hardware test TWICE and it says everything is okay.

Is this a video card thing? Or maybe the RAM is not working?

Any ideas appreciated.

I had the exact same thing as you described above happen about 4 months ago.

When I get home, I will look up the steps to fixed it.

But essentially what I did was

  1. Restart the computer and open it in Diagnostic mode.
  2. Open the Disk Utility.
  3. Run the Repair option.

Once I did this, everthing has worked without any trouble for 4 months.

If you are not sure how to do this, I will add these steps when I post again later.

Three beeps indicates bad RAM. Consider taking it in for a free diagnosis and estimate of repairs.

Using Apple Hardware Test

If it is bad RAM then it is user replaceable and you may as well upgrade it to 8 GB of RAM.

See OWC (macsales.com) or Crucial to purchase the correct RAM.
