mouse problems

My mouse has been working erratically or not at all since a recent power outage (even though computer was off & plugged into surge protector). The light seemed to be dimmed or goes off & on. Frequently just freezes. I tried using white paper instead of mouse pad. That helped for a couple of hours then frooze.

I tried it on another computer & it seems to work there. Tried the jean trick, which improved the light strength. But when I plugged it back into my computer, the problems stated above continued. I tried plugging it directly into USB port. It worked for a minute, then light went off.

What do you think? Should I buy another mouse? Or is there another problem - if so, what should I do? Thanks for your ideas. Fish

Maybe I have bigger problems than just the mouse. I just went back to my computer & tried to send an email with the mouse plugged in the USB port. While the mouse seemed to work, no typing appeared in the email. Is this another problem or normal because the mouse is not plugged into the keyboard? Thanks again, Fish

Thanks for your response. Since my first post, I have tried 2 new mouses(one Apple another non-apple) & neither work. The cursor is frozen so I can't do anything involving cursor movement. I have tried safe boot, resetting PRAM, etc,no luck.

Any suggestions how to get curser to move? Thanks

If I don't get any suggestions, I've concluded I'll have to take the machine into the Apple store.

Today, I turned on computer & for no apparant reason the new Apple mouse worked! (The only thing that occurred since my last post was I unplugged the UPS from the wall because we were going to turn off the power for some electrical installation work.)

With a working mouse, I followed the steps you suggested at Dr. Smokes. I booted from disk & used First Aid to repair volume & permissions.

I tried to use Cocktail to clean cache, but I don't think I did it right, because nothing happened - no messages, nothing.

Now I have the orginal problem I had after power outage. The computer won't shut down - only restarts and my hub & attached peripherials don't work. This problem seemed to be corrected before by resetting nvram inside of Open Firmware. But after a couple of days, the mouse problem developed. Even when the mouse was frozen, the hub worked OK.

So today I reset the nvram inside of Open Firmware again. But no luck this time. Computer continues to restart & hub doesn't work.

Where do I go from here? What can I do to get everything synchornized? If I installed Tiger & printer updates for Tiger, do you think it would resolve my problems or make things worse? Many thanks for your ideas.

I think this will be my final post on this topic. I hauled the computer tower & periphals including hub into the Genius bar. Everything, absolutley everything, worked fine. We could not reproduce the problems of mouse, hub or retarting when it is supposed to shut down.

Of course, when I brought it home & turned it on, all the problems listed above occurred. Fortunately, the USB ports work individually, so I am able to use computer normally, as long as I don't use the hub.

I did buy a new hub, but have not tried it yet.

Thanks for all your suggestions. Fish

Gary was right! Even though the old hub worked perfectly at Apple Store, it didn't work when I brought it home. The computer worked fine as long as I plugged the periphal directly into the USB port on the computer tower.

I bought a new hub and my system is back to normal at last!

So apparently, my mouse & hub were negatively affected by the power outage. I have now replaced both.

Thanks to all for their suggestions. I would have lost my sanity without your help! Fish

i used to have problems with my mouse in the fact that it would be jumpy and whenever i tried to drag the scrole bar in safari or itunes it would freeze.

I found that this problem was with the USB ports in the keyboard and not the mouse.

Instead of using the keyboard as a HUB i now use a dedicated USB Hub (Powered) and run my keyboard and mouse and other devices from that.

This seems to have solved the problem for me. It seems that constant use of the USB ports on my keyboard has begun to have an effect on them.

Hope this helps
