Q: Is my first generation iPad still usable with Airplay?

My first generation iPad worked with Airplay until a week ago. Now I no longer see the Airplay icon.  I have tried the troubleshooting suggestions with not luck.  Is my first generation iPad sill usable with Airplay?

To use AirPlay, you will need the following:

    • iPhone  4s (or later), iPad 2 (or later), iPad mini, or iPod touch (5th generation)
    • Apple TV (2nd or 3rd generation)
    • AirPort Express
    • Wi-Fi (802.11a/g/n) network

AirPlay never worked on a 1st Gen iPad.

what have you tried? ...I would suggest you try these successively in this order... sometimes if you are playing something and you leave house without stopping video some weirdness happens...

    1. make sure you iPad and AppleTV are on same WiFi network if not correct this...
    2. forget/disconnect and reconnect to your WiFi network on you iPad
    3. Restart your iPad
    4. Restart your AppleTV
    5. Restart your router

tmartine, I've tried all your suggestions. Thanks. And I tried them again tonight with no success in getting the Airplay option. My 1st generation iPad had worked with Airplay since I installed Apple TV in July. I also have an iPad 2 which is still working fine with Airplay. Does anyone know if a recent update could be interfering with the 1st gen iPad accessing Airplay?

Per Apple, AirPlay is not supported on the 1st Gen iPad.

I rebooted my router one more time this evening with the Apple TV on and the iPad off. This time the Airplay icon finally was available again when I turned my 1st generation iPad on. I've done this numerous times over the last week with no luck. This time it worked. Wish I knew why it is so temperamental.

Thanks for the support. Night all!

hey diesel, my guess is that they put that there because just to cover their backs... the 1st Gen. iPad's OS can no longer be updated, so if they change something fundemental or added new features relating to AirPlay, it will not get updated on 1st Gen. iPads and AirPlay could cease to function or get new functionality.. so yes, it's no longer "supported", in that they are not going to insure that AirPlay is backwards compatible with any updates, but in spite of this lack of support, at this this time it continues to work... fingers crossed

added to this, AirPlay on the iOS on 1st gen. iPad is a bit flaky at times, doesn't support full screen mirroring etc.. so already it is out of whack with current AirPlay functionality... so AirPlay on these devices is already out of step with current implementation of AirPlay... but the basic functionality still works... uses it all the time.. I used it this morning...

I have the very first generation, too. I use Airplay all of the time with my iPod. I was using it just yesterday, and today there's no icon to switch between iPod and Airplay. I disconnected from my network and reconnected, and the icon was there. It was to the right of the forward button. This has happened to me b4, too. Hope this helps.
