Configuration problems with IMAP e-mail on iOS with a non-standard SSL port.
Try this first - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)
Or this - Delete the account in Mail and then set it up again. Settings->Mail, Contacts, Calendars -> Accounts Tap on the Account, then on the red button that says Remove Account.
Cheers, Tom

Jul 21, 2014 12:55 PM in response to pamela s from mo.by tanglewood02,I changed the following at the same time so I'm not sure which fixed it.
Go into Settings, hit mail symbol, under accounts, tap your mail account, under 'outgoing mail server' make sure it matches the name used on the computer device where mail replies work, Mine says SMTP and had the correct name, tap on it > next screen 'Primary Server' tap on it next screen is 'outgoing mail server' I entered my user name and password, turned on SSL, and entered the correct server port (it had the wrong number). That fixed it.
