Q: Repairing Bootcamp using hybrid?

Any assistance would be much appreciated.

 

Initially i upgraded to Mavericks. I added Windows 8.1 on 500gb factory Macintosh HD with no issues.

 

I have since replaced this drive with a 128gb SSD and swapped optical drive for caddy including the 500gb HD.

 

I cloned Mac OS using Carbon Copy inclusive of recovery partition.

 

I used bootcamp to add 8.1 to the SSD and was able to do so with success. Afterward reformated the 500gb HD into 2 partitions a large one for Mac and a smaller one fore Windows files. Since then i've been unable to boot into Windows.

 

Within my System Preference > Starup Disk provides the option to boot from Windows Bootcamp but when restarting i get "no bootable disk"

 

I am able to see Bootcamp in finder, startup disk option and in disk utility. it just doesn't boot.

 

I have since then been in and out of this thread trying several options including creating a 5th partition and creating the Hybrid disk. I am still unsuccessful in my efforts. Here is what things are looking like now.

    I am not certain if your Mac has a CD/DVD drive or not. If it does not, an external CD/DVD drive can be used start Windows recovery (Windows Recovery Console). In the worst case, a USB ISO image can be used. Does the Bootcamp partition mount properly on the OS X side and show up as a NTFS volume in the Disk Utility? (The Apple NTFS driver is a read-only driver). There are other convoluted methods (like using VMware Fusion or other similar products) to recover the OS, but that is probably a last resort if the current approach does not work.

    I replaced the optical drive with a caddy for a second internal HD. I attempted to boot from recovery usb OS didn't show and computer kept rebooting. I've since installed bootcamp on second internal hard drive and was successful. This is where i'm currently at and have no clue where to go next. frustrating.png

    1. Since you have bootcamp on the second internal drive, the sudo commands should be directed to

     

         sudo gpt -r -vv show disk1

         sudo fdisk /dev/disk1

     

         If you are interested.

     

    2. Do you have files on the original Bootcamp that you want to recover?

     

    3. Can you make partition 2 on disk 0 active using

     

    fdisk -e /dev/disk0

    print

    setpid 2

    07

    flag 4

    print

    write

    y

     

    4. Reboot and see if using the ALT key will let you boot into Windows?


    5. This is another option. The original BC can be fixed by creating a new Hybrid MBR. See this link for guidance  - https://discussions.apple.com/message/24045001#24045001

    The Original bootcamp i would have liked to have kept. I used my access code several times on virtualbox and now bootcamp twice. i'm afraid it won't take again f i have to reinstall. i will try to make disk 2 active and report back.

    On disk1, GPT Part 2 has "Microsoft Basic Data" partition, yet the MBR from fdisk does not show anything marked bootable and the whole disk is type 0xEE. Very confusing.

     

    Do you currently have any bootable Bootcamp partitions?

    Yes. On the second internal drive I  able to boot. I created a disk image of the system and since then erased the original bootcamp. I don't have the benefit of utilizing it on the SSD HD but it's working smoothly. I kind of like having them on separate drives. Thank you for all your help. Very much appreciated.

    One option is start over on the SSD.

     

    1. Take a Time Capsule backup of OS X (and bootcamp, if desired) to an external drive.

    2. Initialise SSD.

    3. Re-install OS X via Command-R on SSD via a TC Restore.

    4. Install Bootcamp/Windows on SSD with the desired partition size for Bootcamp via Bootcamp Assistant. (This will ensure you get a non-EFI installation. Newer Macs do support EFI partially, but there are driver issues with an EFI install).

    5. Verify Bootcamp and OS X.

    6. Remove Bootcamp from the HDD.
