Q: Airport Time Capsule compatibility with older Airport Express

I had an Airport Extreme Base Station (wireless-n, model A1408) paired with two Airport Express units (both are model A1254) and used for Airplay/audio-only purposes. I just upgraded to the Airport Time Capsule 3TB. Prior to my purchase of the ATC, I had looked into the compatibility of these older Express units with the new ATC and didn't see a problem--however they aren't showing up in Airport Utility under "other wifi devices." I've tried the factory reset 3 or 4 times and made sure they were located in close range with the new Time Capsule, figuring I could move them one I had established connection. I know one option would be to re-introduce the airport extreme and again pair the expresses to that, but I was really hoping to simplify things here.

Thanks for any input.

AirPort Express models are A1084, A1088, A1264 and A1392 at least in countries with which I am familiar.

paired with two Airport Express units (both are model A1254)

A1254 is a model number for a Time Capsule.

Can you check the model numbers again on your AirPort Express devices?

Correct, I misread the extremely light gray type on white background! Express model # is 1264.

A1264 is indeed supported by Mavericks and AirPort Utility 6.3.2.

Not sure what the issue might be if you cannot "see" the devices in AirPort Utillty.

You have "hard reset" the A1264 by powering it on for a few minutes, then holding in the reset button for 10 seconds, releasing and allow a full minute for the Express to restart.....correct?

    Restarted your Mac?

Wireless is turned on at the Mac?

Temporarily connected an Ethernet cable from your Mac to the Express?

If nothing works, try the steps in the Apple Support document, then repeat the steps above.

Great, I didn't realize I had to have wireless activated on the mac--after all it is connected to the network already via ethernet and I figured since the connection being sought was between the Express units and the Time Capsule--this setup would be independent of the Mac's wireless capabilities. Anyway, a simple solution--thanks!
