Currency formatting not transferring to Excel

Hi. I made a simple spreadsheet for calculating currency totals in Numbers, using it's internal system for applying a currency format in a cell. When I open this in Excel on my Mac, the cell is not recognised as currency, but simply a custom format that it doesn't recognise.

I can use a simple number format, but I'd rather have a £ sign before the number!

Any ideas?
