Mail: SMTP not working on MacBook Air, same settings work on iPhone

Hello. First time posting here so please forgive any indiscretion. I have searched the support forums but have been unable to find an answer to this problem.

I have identical Mail configurations setup on my iPhone 5 (iOS 7.0.4) and my MacBook Air (OS X 10.9.1). I am able to receive email fine on both (POP), and I can send mail (SMTP) from my iPhone, but the *identical* SMTP settings on my Macbook Air will not send email. The error is:

"Could not connect to this SMTP server. Check your network connection and that you entered the correct information in the Account preferences. Also verify that the server supports SSL. If if does not, deselect the "Use SSL" checkbox in the Advanced tab of Account preferences".

The SMTP settings on both the iPhone and Macbook Air are:

- Use custom port 465 (I have also tried 'Use default ports')

- Use SSL (I have also tried without)

- Authentication is password (I've confirmed user/password is correct)

In my testing I setup a POP/SMTP account on another computer (not a Mac) using Outlook and everything works fine there as well. So from what I can tell this is specific to Mail on my Macbook Air only.

I read in this forum that some users have installed Outlook on their Macbooks and had success. So this seems specific to Mail on Macbook Air?

Any assitance would be much appreciated! Thank you!

Verify that the settings for Gmail and Comcast that you're using are correct. Check the spellings and punctuation carefully. I've seen examples where commas were used instead of periods and STMP used instead of SMTP.

Remember, when trying a new SMTP setting, make sure you delete the previous setting and then quit and restart the Mail application to assure that the previous settings are purged from memory.

Thanks Lanny. We're not using Gmail or Comcast mail servers but my company's dedicated server (Linux running exim) which we've been using for about 6 years now with no issues. I have confirmed no commas or server host misspellings (have also used IP address to ensure it's not a DNS issue). We have email clients configured on many different computers and devices and they are all still working just fine. The problem seems be specific to Mail on OS X. Mail on iOS, Outlook on non-pc, working perfectly with the identical SMTP settings. Completely perplexing. Could this be related to the new OS X?

Sorry about the Gmail and Comcast, I think I confused your issue with that of another poster.

However, Mail is just one of many email clients, and they all have the same requirements for email configuration. You might try adding the account by using the System Preferences, Internet Accounts panel, if you were previously trying it within the Mail application.

Thanks Lanny & Grant. Grant - I've checked the config settings at least 50x by now (no joke) and they are correct. Lanny - thanks for the suggestion on setting up the account through System Preferences > Internet Accounts. I tried that (after deleting the Mail and SMTP server again), and still the same result. Are there any other reliable free mail apps that I might try for OS X? Your help with this very much appreciated .. thank you!

There are others, but frankly, mail works better. So you need to consider two paths:

1. something is fouled in the config - maybe corrupted and you cant fix it. Delete accounts and re-make them, letting mail do as much automtically as possible. Thsi is not a huge deal.

2. You have some errors in the OS 10.9 bits tht support mail sending. A re-install of 10.9 *might* fix the problem. No experience with ho easy it is, since mine worked fine 3x.

Thunderbird is the mail system of firefox. I find ap[le mai far better

Thanks Grant. I was asking about alternate mail clients just for testing purposes, I really want to stick with Mail. I installed Thunderbird, and it is working, sends mail with the exact same settings I've been using with Mail. So, this seems to rule out an OS X issue, and isolate the problem to Mail. Is it possible to re-install Mail on it's own? If not any other suggestions are welcome. Thanks again!

In dont know how to just re-install mail, but you could do a complete re-install.

Now, remember that Mail depends on lower-level UNIX bits in OSX, and Thunderbird may not.

So you cant quite draw the conclusion you did....

Did you trash your mail prefs and re-do the accounts? I forget.

If you didnt --> you should.

If you DID, that indicates some level of corruption of the install, and IMO, would warrant a do-over. what else might be lurking?

Remember, most of us have it working trouble free.

Hi!

I've exactly the same problem with SMTP (iPhone 5 (iOS 7.0.4) and MacBook Air (OS X 10.9.1)) in Mail! Receiving mails is no problem but sending is not possible and I get the same error message as scrappleandeggs.

I really tried everything mentioned above (except complete re-install). But nothing helped unfortunately.

Hope someone could help. It's really frustrating...

Thanks

Had the same problem and solved it by changing the outgoing port to 26 and then changing the outgoing server name per Apples help, "

It may also be called the SMTP server. For example, if your e-mail provider is example.com, the outgoing mail server is likely smtp.example.com.

Just add the smtp to your email provider name as shown.
