I'm having trouble connecting my macbook air to my hp office jet 6500a plus printer.  Both the mac and printer are on the same wireless router, but the mac still can't find the printer.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

First of all, here is a guide to setting up a printer under Mavericks:

Here is a guide discussing connecting the WiFi printer to your network:

Finally, here is a list of the printer and scanner software available in Apple's repertoire.  I don't see your specific printer listed, so maybe you either didn't spell out the exact model name (there are close ones in the list), or you have the software drivers yourself.

Excellent.  Enjoy your MacBook Air and Mavericks.

I'd love to hear how the problem was fixed.

I have a Macbook Pro Retina 13" and am trying to use an HP Officejet 6500 E709n. I can print to it just fine. I can fax with it. But I cannot scan with it. I click scan on the printer's control panel and it tells me there's no computer connected... see owner's manual.

There are no pending updates. The printer shows up on the mac, of course (since I can print to it just fine). I just can't scan. Scans fine when connected to my Windows machine.

I am having the same issue.  I can print fine but I cannot scan.

I figured out how to make this work for me. I hope it will help others.

    Again, my configuration:

Macbook Pro Retina 13" (Mavericks) and am trying to use an HP Officejet 6500 E709n.

System Prefs > Printers & Scanners

Choose the 6500 from the list on the left

Look at the top, right of the resulting window. There should be a print and scan tab. Choose Scan.

Still a bit wonky sometimes, but I can at least get it to scan!

    Good luck.

That worked for a while, but now my iMac (OS 10.9.3) won't scan using any of the HP Scan, Image Capture or the scan button through System Preferences.  It prints fine.  It faxes fine.  It copies fine.  It will not scan.  Sometimes it will recognize the scanner and scan the first page, but then it stops and says no scanner is connected.  I think Apple has failed to update its software to cover the HP Officejet 6500.  I hate to throw out a perfectly good printer because of this issue, but I need a good scanner.

I'm the same, did you figure out a fix? When the apple scanner is open, I am just told that software for this device is not installed (HP Officejet 6500 E710n-z).

I have a similar problem, an IMac that will not see the printer Deskjet 6500 on my network. Two other Mac computers in the house have no trouble printing to this computer. The IMac has no problem with the wifi network in general. It just can't see the printer on that network. The IMac is running Yosemite. The other Macs in the house that are able to see the printer on the network are running older operating systems than Yosemite. I've tried several things I saw suggested on this thread including: installing drivers, resetting inside the System Preferences–Printers box, and trying to add the networked printer manually. No printers show up in the printer list. I also tried turning off the Airport and turning it back on.

    Thank you for any advice.
