Q: Updating OSX 10.5.8 to Snow Leopard

MS Office is on hard drive of Macbook with OS 10.5.8.  I'm installing Snow Leopard OS 10.6.3 operating system.  How do I avoid erasing the MS Office when installing Snow Leopard?  The installation procedure indicates the hard drive will be erased during the first step of installation.

Don't use the Disk Utility to erase the internal drive. Just run the installer.

I concur with Niel but would like to add that you should really consider doing a backup before the upgrade just in case something goes wrong.

Remember is always better to have a backup and not need it then to need a backup and not have it.

    Hi Allan,

I'm old, yet somewhat new to computers.  A family member can't find the MS Word discs.  I bought a flash drive yesterday to save files.  I was told I by sales person that if I saved MS Office on flash drive, MS Office could not be accessed (imported).  I'll save MS Word and other files to flash as you suggested, then do as Niel suggested.  Thanks,

When I said backup before the upgrade, I was not meaning copy a couple of files to a flash drive.

Instead I was suggesting that you create a bootable clone on an external disk. The clone will be able to boot your Mac just the way it running now. To make the bootable clone you need software such as SperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner to do that.

The sales person is correct that the copy of Word to flash drive will not work.
