issue transferring songs to itunes library on my iphone 4s

I am having trouble transferring songs I have bought to my iphone... I haven't had an issue before and not aware of any recent updates that could be messing things up. The songs are showing in my library/playlists, but are greyed out and won't play? It is going through the syncing process, but clearly somthing is wrong. Any ideas?
