I just bought a 32 gb iPad mini off eBay with some damage. Taking it to the Apple store, I found out I was able to get a new one free of charge because it was under warranty. They did this by checking the serial number. After I came home, I realized they gave me a 16 gb instead of a 32 gb, like I had ordered off eBay. Is the serial number specific to the amount of gb's on the device or did the Apple store just mess up?
The serial number is unique to all devices. By checking a serial number Apple can tell you everything about the iPad.
Sounds like a unfortunate mix up, head back to the Apple store. Are you sure the one you got from eBay was 32GB.
That's what I was curious about. The seller on eBay had it listed and sold it as a 32 gb, but I wasn't sure if the device was actually a 16 gb and I got gipped. Will the serial number be specific enough to see if the device I ordered was actually a 16 gb or 32 gb?
If you have the serial number of the defective unit from eBay, enter the last 3 or 4 characters of the serial number at the link below. It will tell you everything about that model.
Since you longer have the original it would be hard to get a refund if the person sent you the wrong one. Usually you need to send it back to get a refund.
If in fact it was a 16GB iPad, you can file a complaint with eBay and the seller will probably have to give you a partial refund.
