Unexpected Shutdown (SMU -110, -122)

Hi all,

I just received my machine back from the Apple Store after having the logic board and CPU replaced. It appears as though the CPU was faulty (to quote the repair tech). You can follow that here:

http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=2773481#2773481

As soon as I brought it home and plugged it in, I've been having unexpected shutdowns. By this I mean that I will be using the computer "normally" (email, web) and it's as though the plug has been pulled. No messages, no warnings, nada. Poof! Fans are at normal speed; the computer seems completely "normal" in all aspects.

From the log below you can see the frequency is increasing. I actually had one occur while posting this, so I started a text file so as not to lose my changes. Then I had one occur while writing this file. I'm literally saving after each sentence!

Jul 25 09:15:48 localhost kernel[0]: AppleSMU -- shutdown cause = 2
Jul 25 19:23:39 localhost kernel[0]: AppleSMU -- shutdown cause = -110
Jul 25 19:30:45 localhost kernel[0]: AppleSMU -- shutdown cause = -122
Jul 25 19:32:42 localhost kernel[0]: AppleSMU -- shutdown cause = 2
Jul 26 09:17:09 localhost kernel[0]: AppleSMU -- shutdown cause = 2
Jul 26 10:11:35 localhost kernel[0]: AppleSMU -- shutdown cause = 2
Jul 26 10:17:44 localhost kernel[0]: AppleSMU -- shutdown cause = 2
Jul 26 10:26:00 localhost kernel[0]: AppleSMU -- shutdown cause = 2
Jul 26 10:36:26 localhost kernel[0]: AppleSMU -- shutdown cause = 2
Jul 27 09:12:20 localhost kernel[0]: AppleSMU -- shutdown cause = -122
Jul 27 09:30:26 localhost kernel[0]: AppleSMU -- shutdown cause = -110
Jul 27 09:40:24 localhost kernel[0]: AppleSMU -- shutdown cause = -110
Jul 27 09:58:41 localhost kernel[0]: AppleSMU -- shutdown cause = -122

Here's what I've tried, and I've received an unexpected shutdown after each of these steps.

- Ran Extended AHT; everything passes. (not that this 'does' anything 🙂
- Removing the USB cable leading to the APC UPS.
- Using wall power instead of UPS power.
- Reset the SMU.

I've now gone from one infamous issue (LED#7) to another infamous issue (SMU -122). To quote Homer, "Urge to kill... rising." Tongue-in-cheek of course, but quite frustrating.

Rob, I had the same- but more random- unexpected
shutdowns with error code -110. After having the
power supply replaced, all is well again (so far!).

That's great news! The only other person on the forum with a -110 seemed to have success with that as well. When I hear from them, I'll be sure to mention this.

In my experience, the Geniuses can be quite dismissive of Apple forum content. I understand that there may be some "out there" things posted, but let's not throw the baby out with the bathwater!

[fingers crossed]

Here is another SMU -110 user who reported success after having Apple replace the power supply, so I'm optimistic!

My lingering concern is that they won't be able to reproduce the shutdown and will call me today saying, "Sorry we can't do anything".

I'll speak to them today and keep you all updated. If a new power supply fixes it, perhaps Apple should add this to the knowledge base.

I struggled with this issue for awhile.
Actually- I only knew I had an issue was when I recently changed my routine of running the Quad full power 24/7 to having it sleep automatically. there was never any evidence of a power supply problem when running it full power 24/7.

At first I thought it was a problem with the built-in Tiger power management software and my APC back-UPS RS1500 VA. I thought I had it solved after having no problems for 3 or 4 days after installing and using the APC Powerchute software:

Then the same problem came back.

I was fortunate to have purchased AppleCare for the Quad- a likely diagnosis was made over the phone and they sent a tech out to my house to replace the power supply. My rig was down for only an hour! This was good since I was in the middle of a big project.

Apple Store phoned Sunday morning (7/30) with news that the power supply had been replaced and that it was ready for pickup.

Ran it pretty hard yesterday for about 12 hours doing various CPU-intensive tasks and it worked without issue.

So far on the forums we have 3 out of 3 people whose -110 issues have been solved with a power supply replacement.

Best of luck to everyone with -122. For those of you with -110, the answer is clear: Have your PS replaced!
