mute or change volume of startup sound

How do I mute or lower the volume of the sound that plays when I start up my MacBook?

Sorry if this is a dumb question. This is my first Mac (and I'm very happy I made the switch). I've done some looking on the Apple site but couldn't find the answer anywhere.

Thanks in advance for any help anyone can give me.

If you go to System Preferences and change your output volume to a lower setting, that noise will be lower when you log back in. Or you could just shut down with a pair of head phones plug in. When you plug them in the volume automatically adjusts to half power. If you shut down with them in your computer will save that as your Master Volume setting. When you restart, it will be lower.

I just started using a Macbook, retiring my Powerbook G3 Pismo. I was astonished and embarassed when I started the Macbook late at night, holding the mute key down, as my usual method for a quiet startup with my Pismo, to hear a loud chime even as I was holding the mute button down!
What is with this? Does this key require a firmware update? I'm running the latest, according to Software Update.
