Downloads stop when...

Hello!

I've waited many long years before I could finally afford to buy an Apple Computer product and experience Mac OS. I finally bought a Macbook Pro yesterday and now am in the process of learning the OS.

I'm trying to download about 8.5GBs of data for a game called Diablo 3 through their Downloader client. The problem is that if I step away from the laptop for a few mins. the screen goes black and the downloader stops downloading the data. I believe the wifi has been turned off after a period of inactivity from the user? Please help.

Thanks in Advance : )

Maky313,

go into the Energy Saver pane of System Preferences. In the lower left corner there is a padlock; if the padlock is locked, click it to unlock it (by providing the appropriate password). Next, select either the Battery tab or the Power Adapter tab, depending upon which energy source you’re relying upon while downloading your data. In either tab, there will be a slider named “Computer sleep:” — set it to Never. There is also a checkbox there named “Put hard disks to sleep when possible” — if it is checked, uncheck it. Close System Preferences, and resume your download. Your screen will still go black after a few minutes, but it should no longer interrupt your download. Once your download is completed, reset your Energy Saver settings to whichever values you prefer.

Hello Melophage,

Thanks for your reply.

I'm afraid I'm not seeing this slider you've mentioned. I went to Energy Saver in Systerm Preferences but there I see Turn Display off slider along with checkboxes for Put hard disks to sleep when possible, Slightly dim the display while on battery power and Enable Power Nap while on battery power. I can't find the Computer sleep slider under the Battery tab. I'm using 10.9.0 if that info is useful.

Hope you can help me further : ).

Maky313,

your Retina MacBook Pro seems to differ from my non-Retina MacBook Pro in this regard. I’m running 10.9.1, and I don’t think that the “Computer sleep” slider was newly added on my model between 10.9.0 and 10.9.1. (I don’t have any Power Nap choices on mine, because my older hardware can’t take advantage of it.)

Perhaps Retina models have an equivalent “Computer sleep” slider in a different System Preferences pane?
