When I choose to 'Restart' the computer(iMac) it hangs.  All I see is the white screen.  I have to power down the iMac.  Then press the power button to restart it.

I checked out the logs in Console to see if I could see error msg related to the shutdown.

I do have a couple external usb drives connected.  Within the console logs I did see some kind of failure related to the external USB drives.  So I decided to unmount the external USB drives before restarting as a test.  Lo and behold the iMac is now able to restart with no issues.

So my question is if ejecting(unmounting) is required prior to restart?  I would expect OS X to automatically unmount the external hard drives.

Does anyone have any insight into this issue that they can help me out with.

Thnaks and I look forward to your reply.
